Description:

In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the microbiological quality of water used in dental water systems. The purpose of this study was to conduct a microbiological survey of dental water units within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Water samples were collected and analyzed for a variety of microbial parameters. Heterotrophic bacteria were examined by cultural methods using several different bacteriological media. Samples were examined for the presence of Legionella sp. by cultural methods and by molecular procedures employing the polymerase chain reaction. Samples were also examined for the presence of free-living protozoa. Data will be presented showing the effects of line flushing and the presence of a chlorine residual upon the microbial quality of the waters.
