The chemical research in the late 1990's witnessed a paradigm shift towards "environmentally-friendly chemistry" more popularly known as "green chemistry" due to the increasing environmental concerns and legislative requirements to curb the release of chemical waste into the atmosphere. "Green chemistry" has become a fundamental and important tool in the critical path towards achieving sustainability. The challenge for chemists involved at all stages of chemical design, manufacture and use is to make incremental changes that when summed will achieve significant accomplishments in the design of new products and processes that are less polluting and hazardous to the environment. This presentation describes various "green chemistry" approaches focusing on the development of new synthetic reaction pathways through catalysis and by using alternative feed stocks and reaction conditions or media for improved selectivity (no/minimum waste) and energy efficiency (economical) with particular emphasis on industrially important cleavage, condensation, cyclization, selective oxidation and reduction reactions including rapid one-pot assembly of heterocyclic compounds from in situ generated reactive intermediates. Besides the development of novel catalysts, other important tools include the use of microwaves (MW) and ultrasound (US) as alternative sources of energy and the use of supercritical fluids (SCF) as an attractive reaction medium.
