A direct synthesis of tertiary amines is presented that proceeds expeditiously via N-alkylation of amines using alkyl halides in alkaline aqueous medium. This environmentally benign reaction is accelerated upon exposure to microwave irradiation resulting in shortened reaction time and minimizing the formation of side products when compared to conventional heating reaction. This general approach may be useful in C-N bond forming reactions and can be extended to the syntheses of heterocyclic amines without using transition metal catalysts.
