Sampling of In Situ Burn Emissions Using a Helium-Filled Balloon
Citation:
Gullett, B. Sampling of In Situ Burn Emissions Using a Helium-Filled Balloon. Oil Spill Science, Ocean Springs,MS, August 29, 2018.
Impact/Purpose:
This talk will discuss highlights of the sampling effort carried out by EPA/ORD to sample emissions from the surface oil burns conducted as part of the clean up effort of the Gulf of Mexico during the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Efforts since Deepwater, including pan burns of oil on water, are discussed as well as current tests aimed at improving oil combustion efficiency.
Description:
An aerial sampling method was successful at sampling emissions from in situ burning during Deepwater Horizon PM emissions are high compared to combustion sources Oil residuals (unburned oil) may be above 20%. Current efforts are working toward higher combustion efficiencies and more effective means of emission sampling
