Impact/Purpose:

Research in the journal article is leading to a product for the Sustainable Supply Chain Design for Consumer Products. The product being "an evaluation detailing the sustainability issues of the industrial partner's supply chain," represented under CSS Task 5.2.4.

Description:

The Industrial Process System Assessment (IPSA) methodology is a multiple step allocation approach for connecting information from the production line level up to the facility level and vice versa using a multiscale model of process systems. The allocation procedure assigns inputs (e.g., raw materials) and outputs (e.g., emissions) to a particular product and its associated manufacturing process. This is an essential starting point when evaluating product sustainability for complex facilities in the course of preparing inventory data for a product’s life cycle assessment. All detailed equations and assumptions used in the development of IPSA are described in this paper. This work was conducted as part of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between The Procter & Gamble Company and the United States Environmental Protection Agency to develop novel tools for the evaluation of sustainable supply chains of consumer products. This research presents the IPSA methodology as a fundamental tool and new standard for evaluating and designing more sustainable products and industrial processes.
