THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES OF A RELEASE OF ETHANOL TO GROUND WATER
Impact/Purpose:
To inform the public.
Description:
The theoretical concentration of ethanol in ground water from a spill of gasoline containing ethanol at 25% will be near 5,000 mg/L. At many sites, the concentration of ethanol will be less due to mass transfer limitations. This concentration of ethanol will degrade at most sites within a few months to a few years. The presence of ethanol may cause the plume of benzene or BTEX compounds in ground water to expand.
