Description:
The user‘s guide entitled “Water Distribution System Analysis: Field Studies, Modeling and Management” is a reference guide for water utilities and an extensive summarization of information designed to provide drinking water utility personnel (and related consultants and researchers) with some guidelines for performing distribution system evaluations. Specifically, the reference guide contains information on: hydraulic and water quality models (primarily EPANET); tracer study evaluations (planning, equipment needs and execution); monitoring methodologies (grab and online); calibration of hydraulic and water quality models using field data; integration of geospatial technology for distribution system management and modeling. The document provides guidance on techniques to select necessary equipment and software for modeling the fate and transport of contaminants (or changes in water quality) in complex piping systems. Finally, the reference guide includes a series of case studies that illustrate the use of several EPA-developed tools such as EPANET, PipelineNet and Threat Ensemble Vulnerability Assessment (TEVA), as well as other modeling tools. The case studies presented in this reference guide include real-world examples that showcase how the modeling tools can support epidemiological investigations, identify sources of contamination, support regulatory requirements, and identify the optimal number and placement of monitors to detect potential contamination and reduce the impacts of such events.
