Battaglin, W., D. Koplin, E. Furlong, S. Glassmeyer, B. Blackwell, S. Corsi, M. Meyer, AND P. Bradley. Contaminants of emerging concern in the environment: Where we have been and what does the future hold? IN: Water Resources IMPACT, American Water Resources Association, Middleburg, VA, 37, (2018).

Impact/Purpose:

The importance of understanding man-made chemicals and the impacts of their usage came to the forefront in the 1960s. Knowledge and concern has grown over subsequent years as methods to identify contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have improved, as have methods to identify the potential effects of CECs. This article summarizes the history and outlook of research on CECs.

Description:

Emerging contaminants are becoming a more prominent issue in water resources. Understanding of man-made chemicals and the impacts of their usage came to the forefront in the 1960s. Knowledge and concern has grown over subsequent years as methods to identify contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have improved, as have methods to identify the potential effects of CECs. New analytical chemistry methods allow for very sensitive detection of CECS in the environment, and of nontarget screening for “unknown” compounds. Likewise, understanding of chemical effects has led to changes in interpretation of CEC occurrence data. The history and horizon of research in CECs is presented here.
