Microplastics in Sediments:a Possible NCCA Indicator

Citation:

Burgess, R. Microplastics in Sediments:a Possible NCCA Indicator. USEPA National Coastal Condition Assessment, Washington DC, Washington DC, June 21, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

Microplastic research is a rapidly expanding field. This presentation summarized a possible national coastal condition assessment (NCCA) indicator for microplastics in sediments. This was a brief, informal 7 minute presentation to the NCCA program managers on how evaluating microplastics in marine sediments could be a useful NCCA indicator. If NCCA accepts sediment microplastics as an indicator, this could be of interest to managers and scientists in Regions, States, Tribes and Programmatic Offices

Description:

Microplastics in the ocean and sediments are an increasing problem. Sediment microplastics will make a good national coastal condition assessment (NCCA) supplemental Indicator. This brief, informal presentation suggested that measuring microplastics in sediments is feasible and would add to the current NCCA coastal indicators. Points covered included an overview of microplastic pollution in sediments, the background necessary to perform the research and the current interest that managers and scientists in Regions, States, Tribes and Programmatic Offices have indicated..
