Cascio, W. Million Hearts 2022: Understanding the Links between Environmental Pollutant Exposure and Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Events - Justus-Warren Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Task Force. Million Hearts 2022, Durham, NC, May 08, 2018.

Impact/Purpose:

The webinar will raise awareness among six legislators (three each recommended by the Speaker of the House and President Pro Tem of the Senate), health professionals, survivors, embers of volunteer and governmental organizations, a business leader, and a news director about the association of environmental quality and heart and vascular health, and in particular in association between air particle pollution and heart attack and stroke. This information should have value when state and local decision-makers consider issues related to environmental quality.

Description:

The webinar was requested by the Justus-Warren Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Task Force. From their website, “The task force was established in 1995 in North Carolina to provide statewide leadership for the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease. Meetings are open to the public. Agendas, minutes and presentations are available online and may be downloaded. The task force has 27 members. Twenty-four are appointed by the Governor and the NC General Assembly, and three are designated representative of the NC Department of Health and Human Services. The Task Force makes recommendations and compiles report for the NC General Assembly and other stakeholders.” The webinar will present credible scientific data that shows the association between air particle pollution and heart and vascular health and the associated public health burden. The presentation will describe the subgroups within the population who are at highest risk, and who merit instruction to avoid exposure to poor air quality conditions when possible. EPA and Million Heart 2022 tools will be discussed in the context of resources that can be used to reduce exposure and protect public health, especially among those at highest risk.
