Impact/Purpose:

The impact of this talk will be the discussion of translational research and health impact assessment as a method for conducting translational research. Participants will be able to identify opportunities to utilize HIA to promote sustainable communities, social justice, health, and economic prosperity.

Description:

Increased attention to the links between built and natural environments and public health, coupled with initiatives at the state, regional, and federal levels to incorporate environmental and human health in planning and policy decision-making may signal new opportunities for the use of Health Impact Assessment (HIA). Building upon past efforts, this session will aim to identify opportunities for the systems-based approach of HIA to inform decisions at the state, regional and national levels, including environmental remediation, disaster recovery, transportation, and community revitalization. Participants will learn what translational research is, how it differs from applied research, and what initiatives currently exist for translational research. Participants will identify the areas where opportunities to promote HIA can most easily be leveraged and where HIA can most effectively be used to translate science into knowledge; close the gaps between scientific research, human health, and decision-making; and provide transdisciplinary research that supports sustainable communities, social justice, health, and economic prosperity.
