Impact/Purpose:

This presentation relates to SHC 1.62.4 to introduce local government representatives & sustainability managers to the EnviroAtlas materials on the concepts of ecosystem services and urban heat islands. This presentation will educate and empower them to use the EnviroAtlas data in their communities.

Description:

These slides are for a 20-30 min invited talk on Urban Heat Islands (UHI). The first section of slides introduces the concept of UHI and explains why it is important. The second section introduces the EnviroAtlas EcoHealth Browser and Mapping application as resources. It also includes screenshots of the Durham area as an example of relevant data layers for decision makers. The final section of the presentation discusses ways that cities can mitigate UHI and points to further EPA resources via the EPA's UHI Webarea.
