This book chapter summarizes the findings of different studies on the prevention and elimination of cyanobacterial blooms in raw water resources as well as the removal of cyanotoxins during water treatment with physical processes.

Description:

This book chapter presents findings of different studies on the prevention and elimination of cyanobacterial blooms in raw water resources as well as the removal of cyanotoxins during water treatment with physical processes. Initially,treatments that can be applied at the source water and can limit the formation of Cyano-HABs, such as aeration and the addition of chemicals (copper sulfate (CuSO4)) are discussed. It should be noted that discussion on the limit of nutrients toaquatic systems is beyond the scope of this chapter. Discussion is provided on the efficiency of conventional treatment processes such as coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation utilized for the removal of both cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins,followed by discussion on the role of filtration and membrane processes. Adsorption of cyanotoxins on several micro and nanomaterials was also investigated along withactivated carbon (AC). Finally, integrated treatment examples are analyzed with a specific reference to a lab study on powdered AC (PAC)–ultrafiltration (UF) technologies for the removal of cyanotoxins.
