ADDRESSING EMERGING ISSUES IN WATER QUALITY THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY

Impact/Purpose:
The research focused on in the subtasks is the development and application of state-of the-art technologies to meet the needs of the public, Office of Water, and ORD in the area of Water Quality. Located In the subtasks are the various research projects being performed in support of this Task and more in-depth coverage of each project. Briefly, each project's objective is stated below.
Subtask 1: To integrate state-of-the-art technologies (polar organic chemical integrative samplers, advanced solid-phase extraction methodologies with liquid chromatography/electrospray/mass spectrometry) and apply them to studying the sources and fate of a select list of PPCPs. Application and improvement of analytical methodologies that can detect non-volatile, polar, water-soluble pharmaceuticals in source waters at levels that could be environmentally significant (at concentrations less than parts per billion, ppb). IAG with USGS ends in FY05. APM 20 due in FY05.
Subtask 2: Coordination of interagency research and public outreach activities for PPCPs. Participate on NSTC Health and Environment subcommittee working group on PPCPs. Web site maintenance and expansion, invited technical presentations, invited articles for peer-reviewed journals, interviews for media, responding to public inquiries.
Subtask 3: To apply state-of-the-art environmental forensic techniques to the recognition and characterization of emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment. There is a need for high sensitivity and for a powerful method of structural characterization, advanced mass spectrometric and chromatographic techniques to be employed to meet the challenge of emerging pollutants, including pharmaceuticals and personal care products, agents of sabotage, and explosives. Ongoing efforts continue to identify previously unrecognized pollutants from a range of problematic samples having importance to regional and state contacts.
Subtask 4: To provide the Agency with a set of practical analytical methods for the selective and sensitive determination of selenium species (organic, inorganic, volatile and non volatile forms) in multiple media to accurately assess and if necessary control the risk of selenium exposure to organisms. This includes development of optimal extraction, digestion, separation and detection approaches.
Subtask 5: To develop and apply an analytical method that can extract and detect synthetic musks. The extent of exposure may be determined by measuring levels of synthetic musks from their potential source (communal sewage effluent). This subtask ends in FY05 with the deliverable of APM 21. Future applications to biosolids will be covered in subtask 6.
Subtask 6: Application, and improvement, of previously in-house developed sensitive, robust, and green, methodologies regarding the use of urobilin and sterols as a possible markers of sewage contamination.
Subtask 7: Adaptation and improvement of previously developed in-house methods, for PPCPs (e.g., antibiotics and musks) to solid materials (e.g. biosolids, sediments).
Subtask 8: Study of the presence of personal care products, incombustible organic compounds from the direct-piping of small engines exhaust in Lake Tahoe, and lake deposition of airborne pollutants from industrial activity
Description:
Public concern over cleanliness and safety of source and recreational waters has prompted researchers to look for indicators of water quality. Giving public water authorities multiple tools to measure and monitor levels of chemical contaminants, as well as chemical markers of contamination, simply and rapidly would enhance public protection. The goals of water quality are outlined in the Water Quality Multi-year Plan [http://intranet.epa.gov/ospintra/Planning/wq.pdf] and the research in this task falls under GPRA Goal 2, 2.3.2, Long Term Goals 1, 2, and 4.

Progress :Subtask 1: Samples were analyzed and data collated from the POCIS samplers that were placed at four sites during the summer (2002) and winter (2003). The data collected from that study were published in 2004, APM 20 FY05. IAG extended to end in Sept. 2005. Alternate extraction techniques were experimented with, and numerous samples from various sites throughout US were analyzed for antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals. (PI Jones-Lepp)Subtask 2: "Virtual" Symposium on PPCPs: Symposium took place in FY04, August 2004, Philidelphia, PA. This virtual symposium was co-sponsored with the American Chemical Society (ACS). Numerous presentations at the symposium, both virtual and live, were given from US, Canadian, and European researchers regarding PPCPs. Overall, the first-ever virtual symposium was a success. The full proceedings (including narrated presentations) from this virtual symposium have been captured on the beta version of the PPCPs web site and will be available (http://epa.gov/nerlesd1/chemistry/ppcp/acs-25aug2004.htm) once approved for uploading. Subtask 3: Hemoglobin adducts were found in musk-exposed trout and also from environmentally exposed carp from Lake Mead, NV. Dr. Mottalieb (former NSF post-doc) used a modification of literature methods using GC/Ion trap mass spectrometry, the results were promising, and some adducts have been detected. Dr. Mottaleb successfully completed this project in 2004 and the results can be found listed under Planned Products for FY05 (or here: http://epa.gov/nerlesd1/chemistry/pharma/musks.htm). Sample extracts were received from South Africa, Florida, and Massachusettes during FY04, and analyzed for contaminant unknowns, specifically pharmaceutically classed ones. Collaborated with NEIC on the identification of test unknowns for Homeland Security purposes. (PIs Sovocool, Grange)
Subtask 4: New project start in FY05, building upon previous work for Superfund office, Task 4023, FY06 APM 210. (PIs Momplaisir, Rosal)
Subtask 5: Conclusion of work on musk compounds in fish tissues. Developed screening and laboratory analytical methods for the detection of musk compounds in fish tissue to support risk assessments, cross-over to Superfund support regarding site cleanups and risk assessments. Work has been concluded and published in a journal article, APM 21 FY05. (PI Osemwengie)
Subtask 6: Continuation of research regarding the use of urobilin as a chemical indicator of pathogens. Continued working with NHEERL on Beaches project with Drs. Rebecca Calderon and Elizabeth Sams (NHEERL). Every two weeks from Memorial Day to Labor Day (2004) samples were sent from two beach sites on Lake Michigan, this project was to look at a specific marker of sewage contamination (urobilin - a by-product of hemaglobin degradation). A final internal report will be sent in FY05 to NHEERL. Sample extracts from Region 1 were received and analyzed for both urobilin and azithromycin (a human-use pharmaceutical). A final internal report will be sent to Region 1 in FY05. Samples collected from areas possibly contaminated with leaking septic tank sewage were collected and analyzed for urobilin, positive results were obtained. (PI Jones-Lepp)
Start of new project using sterol patterns as chemical indicators of pathogens. Developing methodologies and applying to real-world problem for the municipality of Anacostia, Washington D.C. (who requested help). (PI Brumley)
Subtask 7: Literature searching and sources of biosolids reference materials were investigated. Osemwengie attended the first interagency Biosolids Conference in late June 2004. (PIs Osemwengie, Brumley, Jones-Lepp, )

Relevance :
The significance, relevance, and impact of this work is multi-faceted and multi-dimensioned. The diversity of outcomes that have occurred, and those that are newly recognized, span many areas - some of which were never anticipated. For example, fostering new directions at EPA, other Agencies, continuing education, new communications in Science, modifying community behaviour, etc. These various outcomes are a direct result of the number and variety of the products that been produced and the nature of the work, which spans many disciplines and interests. Unanticipated potential ramifications and outcomes have already emerged as a result of the new emphasis on counter-terrorism.
