Impact/Purpose:

Coastal communities are looking to explore nature-based solutions such as marsh restoration to flooding and storm surge. This research investigates potential nature based solutions for coastal resilience in the community of Crisfield, Maryland, including social and economic co-benefits, using a co-production approach involving community and other stakeholders. The research may be of interest to researchers and engineers studying working on coastal resilience and ecosystem services, coastal managers and communities, and transdisciplinary scientists. 

Description:

This presentation shares an overview of the research that ORD is planning to co-produce with the Crisfield, Maryland community and stakeholders to investigate options for nature-based solutions for coastal resilience. It presents preliminary research results from scoping potential nature-based solutions including marsh restoration and living breakwaters and describes the approach that will be taken to investigate social and economic co-benefits of these solutions to the Crisfield community. The presentation will be shared at a meeting with project stakeholders including federal, state, and local government agencies, university and NGO representatives to solicit input and feedback for moving forward with the research.
