Impact/Purpose:

Current and future SSWR research on nutrient modeling in the Mississippi River Basin and modeling hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. Includes work on how the National Nutrient Inventories for nitrogen and phosphorus impact water quality in the Mississippi River Basin, how fertilizer and best managment practices can improve nutrient managment plans for the basin, how wetland mitigation can improve runoff of nitrogen in the basin and how multi-media modeling can inform nutrient decisions and mitigate hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico.

Description:

An overview of four Mississippi River Basin modeling efforts was presented: Nutrient Inventories: Links to MRB Water Quality; Synthesis of BMP Effectiveness in the UMRB; Modeling the UMRB: wetlands, nutrients, and more; and Multi-media modeling of the MRB and Northern GOM Hypoxia. The first two modeling efforts are data and synthesis based approaches which address agricultural practices and surpluses in the Mississippi River Basin. The second two modeling efforts are simulation based approaches which show how wetland mitigation can address surplus nitrogen in the upper Mississippi River Basin and how integrated multi-media modeling can predict the effects of climate change on hypoxia and inform decision making related to nutrient management.
