Impact/Purpose:

This will be an oral presentation at the National Adaptation Forum in May 2024 in St. Paul, Minnesota--as such it will introduce the Adaptation Organon to adaptation professionals from a variety of sectors, disciplines and organizations nationally.

Description:

An ‘organon’ is a thought instrument or system of logic that unifies a body of scientific principles. The Adaptation Organon (AO) is an interactive, web-based instrument for considering climate change and other environmental information to inform adaption and improve natural resource management. This presentation will outline how the AO is being used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new Integrated Climate Sciences Division to provide regional, state and tribal partners with: 1) an introduction to resilience-based adaptation planning; 2) examples of projects, methods, and tools that fulfill the key components of adaptation planning and implementation; 3) integrated guidance on equity and environmental justice considerations at each step; and 4) a planning aid for decisions on siting (where to work), tactics (what to do), and specific adaptation design (how to do it). Key components of resilience-based adaptation are illustrated using real-world examples of approaches to climate-smart management for four systems (corals, cold water fish, stream habitat, and salt marsh). Case studies are underway with state, tribal and local community partners for collaborative resilience-based planning of projects and programs using the AO, and ideas for additional projects and partnerships will be brainstormed.
