Impact/Purpose:

Regulatory application requires systematic documentation of the identification, assimilation and evaluation of pertinent data underlying any assessment. Increasingly, this has entailed adherence to prescribed protocols, designed to increase transparency and potentially, reproducibility of evidence identification and evaluation. To some degree, the extensive guidance on the appropriate documentation of AOPs meets this need.

Description:

The concept of AOP is a new concept for radioprotection research that has originally been proposed and developed for the assessment of the toxicity of chemical stressors with an overall goal to aid regulation based off mechanistic knowledge of biological effects. Promoted and coordinated by the OECD, the AOP concept has been considered of value to radioprotection research that can help reconcile knowledge within radiation biology and epidemiology. The workshop’s main objective is to enhance awareness of and trigger interest in the AOP concept among those involved in radioprotection research. We therefore plan an in-depth immersion in the topic starting from the introduction to detailed coverage of the concept and to hands-on sessions during which specific AOPs will be proposed. The talk titled "Use of Specialized Software to Facilitate Use of Systematic Methods" will be giving during the session titled, "Usefulness of AOP to identify knowledge gaps and define research priorities". The talk provides examples of systematic review tools and ab example application for efficiently finding, screening, and summarizing findings from large evidence bases to prioritize research efforts. However, guidance for AOPs does not address currently, the systematic assimilation of, nor quality of the underlying studies, which might additionally improve their defensibility for regulatory application. It is important to ensure, however, that improved transparency and potentially, reproducibility of evidence identification does not detract markedly from efficiency in AOP development. Therefore systematic review methodology and tools are being considered to increase the efficiency and transparency of AOP development.
