PFAS Breakthrough and NOM Effects from Pilot-Scale AEX Columns (9/24). Presented at 21st Annual EPA Drinking Water Workshop: Small System Challenges and Solutions, Cincinnati, OH, September 17 - 19, 2024.

Impact/Purpose:

1) The environmental or health problem addressed by the study: Understanding removal of per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from drinking water using strong-base anion exchange (SBA) resins. 2) A general description of the work and results: Column experiments have been conducted with strong-base anion exchange (SBA) resin to provide column breakthrough datasets and NOM effects to support further development of an Ion Exchange Column Model.  3) The long-term importance or significance of the findings: Provides necessary breakthrough datasets and input parameters for water treatment models, which are currently scarce in the literature. Provides data for NOM effects on PFAS breakthrough from fixed bed ion exchange columns. 4) Who would be interested in or could apply the results (e.g. program or regional partners, general public, local communities): Drinking water utilities, researchers, states, regulators, engineers, Regions, OW

Description:

This presentation provides insight into the effects of natural organic matter (NOM) on PFAS removal by anion exchange resins. Pilot-scale fixed-bed columns with PFA694E (a strong-base, gel resin) were used to observe PFAS breakthrough with and without NOM at four empty bed contact times (EBCTs; 0.5-, 1.0-, 1.5-, and 2.5- min) with stable influent conditions of known water quality. An ion exchange column model (IEX-CM) was applied for parameter optimization and simulating PFAS effluent concentrations for comparison with experimental data. Apparent non-adsorptive removal of GenX with increasing EBCT and in the absence of NOM will also be discussed.
