Impact/Purpose:
Consideration of PFAS precursors is necessary in order to close the gap between targeted PFAS analysis and a comprehensive quantification of total PFAS. However, current understanding is limited, and there are many misconceptions and questions: where are PFAS precursors found? Are they an environmental source of stable PFAS products like PFOA? How are they characterized? Available analytical methods, such as the Total Oxidizable Precursor (TOP) assay, Adsorbable Organic Fluorine (AOF), and targeted standard methods, have different applications and limitations. This presentation covers the current research on PFAS precursors and what the next steps are.
