Citation:

Birney, C., B. Young, M. Chambers, AND W. Ingwersen. FLOWSA v2.0.0. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

FLOWSA is a Python tool developed and maintained by USEPA to support industrial ecology modeling. Additional information on the USEPA's industrial ecology modeling efforts are described at https://www.epa.gov/land-research/tools-industrial-ecology-modeling-tiem.

Description:

FLOWSA is a Python package developed to streamline the attribution of resources (environmental, economic, material), emissions, and wastes (collectively called flows) to sectors, generally North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. Models capture the movement of flows between the environment and sectors, as well as transfers between sectors. The v2.0.0 release includes significant enhancements from v1.0.0. The v2.0.0 release includes new primary data sources, sector attribution models, data visualization functions, attribution methods, and sector codes. FLOWSA v2.0.0 contains improved code and expanded functionality. In addition to being used for stand-alone sector attribution modeling, FLOWSA supports USEEIO (https://www.epa.gov/land-research/us-environmentally-extended-input-output-useeio-models), as FLOWSA datasets are the environmental inputs to useeior (https://github.com/USEPA/useeior). The FLOWSA Python code and additional documentation can be found on GitHub (https://github.com/USEPA/flowsa).
