Impact/Purpose:

To share an overview of the USEEIO State Models with ACLCA 2023 attendees.  Presentation- Assessing State-Level Impacts of Goods and Services Using USEEIO

Description:

EPA maintains national-level environmentally-extended input-output models in USEEIO. However, these models mask what could be significant domestic variation in supply chains and emissions profiles of goods and services at the state-level. In 2022, EPA published for the first time state-based economic input-output tables that reflect economic transactions between sectors for a given state and the rest of the U.S. for all 50 states via the stateior package.  These two-region models are available annually (2012-2020) and cover 73 distinct U.S. economic sectors. Here we describe creation of state level EEIO models with compatible environmental extensions necessary to convert these two-region economic tables into full environmentally-extended two-region models. These state EEIO models reflect state level differences in emissions of greenhouse gases, criteria and hazardous air pollutants, and water consumption, among other extensions. Our results show the variation across states in per dollar production of goods and services for land use, water withdrawal and employment. The models will be used in the near future for consumption-based GHG emissions inventories for several northeast states.
