Impact/Purpose:
Modeling water age is a simple approach to assessing a water distribution system¿s (WDS¿s) general water quality. This article demonstrates the use of EPANET for modeling water age with specific discussions to highlight why determining water age is important, how to interpret results, and provides some best practices using EPANET. Water age was calculated using EPANET v2.00.12 and v2.2. EPANET v2.2 added mass-balance calculations and had overall improved computational time, mass-balance performance and model stability compared to v2.00.12. The results and discussion provided here should be useful to anyone interested in water quality modeling using EPANET, e.g., those responsible for designing, improving, or operating a WDS.
