Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable Spring 2022 Web Meeting - Application of Robotics, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Technologies to Site Remediation, Virtual, OH, June 06, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

This is a requested presentation to identify next generation emissions measurement technology for evaluating fugitive loss from municipal solid waste landfills.

Description:

As carbon reduction policies are evaluated, more accurate data on landfill methane and other pollutants is needed to document potential reductions from landfills and solid waste management. Next Generation Emissions Measurement technology (NGEM) will help document carbon reductions and provide greater transparency in response to EJ concerns. EPA regions interfacing with impacted communities are requesting access to more accurate emissions data to help with compliance and enforcement actions.  Better data would also help support development of landfill gas energy projects through reducing current uncertainty in estimating emissions that occur over multiple decades.  To meet ORD partner needs, improved measurement approaches are needed for identifying and mitigating surface leaks and quantifying total emissions from landfills. On the ground information on waste characteristics and landfill management practices is needed in conjunction with the aerial survey measurements so that results can be used to assess and improve existing data and models such as those used in the GHG Inventory and GHGRP. Improved emission source models and emission control strategies need to be developed in parallel, leveraging the executed field work.
