Accumulation and Release of Contaminants from Old Cast Iron Pipe Section

Citation:

Crockett, E., M. Tang, D. Lytle, D. Williams, AND C. Muhlen. Accumulation and Release of Contaminants from Old Cast Iron Pipe Section. Presented at Small Systems Workshop, Cincinnati, OH, August 29 - September 01, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

Iron pipe scale can accumulate contaminants, such as arsenic, that are hazardous to human health when released into a drinking water system. Arsenic was added to a cast iron pipe loop system to determine the take up and release of arsenic from the iron scales in the pipe. Orthophosphate was also added to the system to determine what impact it would have on arsenic release.

Description:

The objectives of this research is to determine the extent to which iron and iron scales will uptake As and Pb, how much As and Pb will be released, with or without presence of orthophosphate.
