Go green: directing benefits with urban greenspace through stormwater management
Citation:
Hopton, M. AND P. Jordan. Go green: directing benefits with urban greenspace through stormwater management. To be Presented at Water Research Webinar, NA, Virtual, May 18, 2022.
Impact/Purpose:
Overview of case study demonstrating application of a framework to leverage ancillary benefits while managing stormwater with greenspace. Framework will assist communities in obtaining desired benefits and ecosystem services and direct them toward desired demographics.
Description:
Changes in population growth, urban development, and climate have increased the occurrence of stormwater related problems. Green infrastructure often is proposed as a tool to help manage stormwater in urban areas. Other types of greenspace can serve as green infrastructure and should be included in stormwater management plans. Plus, research indicates a number of other benefits and ecosystem services come from urban greenspace. We developed a framework to leverage these social, economic, and environmental benefits while managing stormwater. Using St. Louis Missouri as a case study, we demonstrate how to apply the framework in a directed manner to provide benefits equitably to generally underserved communities. The next step is to conduct real-world field studies to evaluate the framework.
