Impact/Purpose:

This non-peer reviewed article describes the manuscripts that are contained in the PFAS topical issue published in Water Science largely in 2021.

Description:

In recent years, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have become a major challenge for drinking water providers. At the forefront of the discussion is the need to have both robust sampling and analytical methods, and cost-effective treatment approaches. As demonstrated herein, and in the articles published in this topical issue, progress is being made in these areas. For sampling and analytical methods, current approaches are scrutinized, while other methods are being developed, such as those for defining total organic fluorine. For PFAS treatment, recent progress is shown for determining the efficacy of readily available common technologies for varying water qualities and treatment options. Also, progress has been made in developing novel technologies that may destroy PFAS, which would avoid the need for environmental releases or long-term storage.
