Garland, J. AND M. Jahne. Overview of Research to Inform Risk-Based Guidance for Onsite Non-potable Water Reuse. Watereuse Association for Onsite and Distributed Water Recycling Committee, Virtual, Virtual, January 25, 2022.
Impact/Purpose:
Reviw relevant EPA ORD reserch with a group of interested experts (industry, utility, govenment, non-profits) who have volunteered to serve on the Watereuse Association's committee dealing with onsite reuse sysems.
Description:
The need for defining treatment guidance for safe onsite non-potable water reuse was identified as a key roadblock to adoption by a diverse group of public health regulators and utilities who came together to form the National Blue Ribbon Commission (NBRC) for Onsite Non-potable Water Systems (ONPWS). This session presents the research ORD has performed to support the development of risk-based public health approach. The technical basis for the risk-based approach for treatment guidance will be reviewed, including the specific approach used to develop and validate risk models, and resulting log reduction targets for representative pathogens for a range of fit-for purpose non-potable reuse of locally collected alternative water sources. The technical strengths and weaknesses of this approach will be summarized
