Description:

The drinking water industry is experiencing renewed interest in optimizing manganese control to reduce aesthetic concerns, minimize distribution system challenges, and address associated health concerns. Managing manganese levels in drinking water is an important aspect of delivering high-quality drinking water to customers. Manganese can cause aesthetic concerns due to water discoloration, undermining consumer confidence in water quality. Recent research indicates that elevated levels of manganese in drinking water can cause health concerns, especially for infants and children. This article serves as an introduction to an article series sponsored by the AWWA Manganese Subcommittee which is aimed at increasing awareness, understanding, and knowledge transfer of manganese issues among the drinking water community. This article presents an overview of manganese levels, sources, occurrence, and consequences in drinking water systems. Subsequent articles will describe manganese treatment strategies, case studies, and distribution system strategies to control legacy manganese.
