Impact/Purpose:

Following the development of the Non-potable Environmental and Economic Water Reuse Calculator (NEWR), this presentation showcased to the stakeholders how to generate planning-level estimates of system cost and environmental performance using location and basic building characteristics as input.

Description:

The U.S. EPA’s Non-Potable Environmental and Economic Water Reuse (NEWR) Calculator is a simple to use web-based tool for screening-level assessments of source water options for any urban building location across the Unites States that is considering onsite non-potable reuse. Based on ZIP code and building characteristics, NEWR can be used by any building designer, utility personnel, or water resource professional looking to evaluate the relative cost and environmental impacts associated with different source water options for onsite non-potable reuse at a preliminary or screening level of detail, prior to them performing more detailed engineering calculations. It can help alleviate increasing pressures on water resources associated with climate change and increase local water supply resiliency.  NEWR is recommended for evaluation of non-potable reuse systems in buildings with 50 or more occupants.  NEWR supports the National Water Reuse Action Plan.
