Impact/Purpose:

This presentation was requested through the EPA-RTP Speaker's Bureau. This presentation is designed to educate 3rd-5th graders in the NYC LEAP Entrepreneur's program on the basics of nanotechnology. This afterschool program teaches children about advanced technologies and would like this presentation at one of their events. Nanotechnology is quickly being incorporated into many more consumer products and research into nanotechnology has expanded significantly in the last decade.

Description:

The presentation outlines the basics of nanotechnology from creation in a lab to incorporation into consumer products. Nanotechnology is based on the words "nano", meaning one billionth in size, and technology. There are many types of nanotechnology including nanowires, nanoparticles, nanomaterials, and nanoelectronics. They are created in the lab through physical means, chemical solutions, and heated gaseous mixtures. Graphene was the first isolated and studied nanomaterial. These technologies are incorporated into consumer products such as computers, phones, 3D printed objects, paint, reflective surfaces and many other things. This trend will likely continue in the fields of nanomedicine and nanorobotics, which rely on biomimicry as inspiration.
