Overview of the Ohio Wastewater Monitoring Network

Citation:

Brinkman, N. AND R. Fugitt. Overview of the Ohio Wastewater Monitoring Network. To be Presented at DHS/NIST Workshop: Standards to Support an Enduring Capability in Wastewater Surveillance for Public Health, Cincinnati, OH, June 14 - 18, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

Environmental surveillance of wastewater can be used to monitor the prevalence, genetic diversity, and spatial/temporal trends of enteric virus circulation in communities, uncovering silent transmission before severe disease is documented. A lack of methods standardization for quantification of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater has led to variability among lab measurements.  This presentation contributes to a broader discussion with DHS/NIST to develop a more robust wastewater surveillance capability.

Description:

Our experience with the state-wide the Ohio wastewater monitoring program will be presented with a focus on efforts to assess comparability of analytical methods across the multiple labs that contribute data to the network. The presentation will cover an overview of the network, the analytical methods utilized by labs in the network, insights into measurement gaps and suggestions to reduce uncertainty in wastewater measurements.
