Research Update: Suspension and Wipe Testing with Artemisia tilesii

Citation:

Ratliff, K. Research Update: Suspension and Wipe Testing with Artemisia tilesii. n/a, N/A, North Carolina, March 26, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

The purpose of this presentation is to provide an update on technical support provided to the Organized Village of Kwethluk to determine if traditional Native American cleaning methods (using plant material) have a virucidal effect. Studies were conducted using Artemesia tilesii (stinkweed) gathered in the City of Kwethluk and shipped from Alaska to determine the efficacy of the plant extract and leaves for wiping against viruses. This research is of interest to the Organized Village of Kwethluk and other tribes that may use similar cleaning methods.

Description:

This presentation provides a summary of tests conducted to determine the virucidal effects of Artemesia tilesii against bacteriophages MS2 and Phi6. Suspension tests conducted with the plant extract indicate no major difference between bacteriophage suspended in deionized water vs. bacteriophage suspended in A. tilesii extract. Similarly, wipe tests conducted with the plant leaves do not show greater efficacy against virus inoculated on stainless steel coupons vs. a laboratory wipe wetted with deionized water.
