Microbiology 101 for Drinking Water

Citation:

Boczek, L. Microbiology 101 for Drinking Water. Presented at Small Systems Webinar Series, Cincinnati, OH, May 19, 2020.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation will give an overview of the microbiology surrounding drinking water. Many individuals involved in drinking water treatment don't understand the role that microbes play in the regulations and decision making processes surrounding water treatment. This presentation will highlight some of these advancements made in drinking water treatment with respect to microbiology.

Description:

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms; some of the most common classes of microbes include bacteria, viruses, and protozoans. Many microscopic organisms have a long history of importance to human health through our drinking water supply. Some are pathogenic and have caused widespread outbreaks, while others are used to indicate the possible presence of more pathogenic organisms. The understanding of microorganisms has led to the many advancements in water treatment of water systems and the birth of the federal drinking water program. This presentation will give the audience a basic understanding of microbiology specifically targeting microbes that have had an impact on drinking water supplies, and on regulations
