Impact/Purpose:

This document is a short specific topic manual on the use of the new flow mapping functionality in the openLCA software (openLCA.org). The purpose is to explain to openLCA users how to make use of this new functionality, using examples where flow conversion to the Federal LCA Commons elementary flow list are performed.

Description:

Life cycle assessment (LCA) software requires a harmonization of model elementary flows that are used all life cycle inventory data and impact assessment methods used with a particular LCA model and calculation. Software users may wish to use standardized flow lists, like the Federal LCA Commons elementary flow list, and convert elementary flows in existing data present in the software to standardized flow. This manual describes new functionality added to openLCA software that supported elementary flow conversion using mappings from source flows to target flows in a desired flow list. This new functionality reflects an additional contribution from EPA to the open source and freely available openLCA software for performing standard life cycle assessment of products.
