Impact/Purpose:

This a a presentation at the EPA Region 2 Science Day to be held Friday, February 21, 2020 for students of Middlesex College . It is a brief overview of green infrastructure. It reviews the natural water cycle and shows how development impacts the water cycle. It then presents a history of stormwater controls for impervious cover. It then shows how green infrastructure is being implemented by municipalities in the right of way and then describes how green infrastructure can be implemented by property owners.

Description:

Our understanding of stormwater and flood controls has changed over time. More modern approaches like low impact development seeks to store water at the lot level rather than having connected impervious cover bringing stormwater runoff to an off-site storage location. Green Infrastructure art the municipal level seeks to use the surface areas of the municipal right of way to capture and infiltrate or evapotransporate stormwater rather than to use traditional grey infrastructure to convey water to large detention basin or to release directly to receiving waters.
