Free Chlorine Estimator for Dichlor and Trichlor Systems

Citation:

Wahman, D. Free Chlorine Estimator for Dichlor and Trichlor Systems. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/600/C-19/034, 2019.

Impact/Purpose:

The environmental or health problem addressed by the study: The model estimates the free chlorine concentration in systems using Dichlor or Trichlor for their chlorine source, including the impact of temperature. A general description of the work and results: Model code was developed to allow calculation of the free chlorine concentration in systems using Dichlor or Trichlor as their chlorine source under a range of conditions representative of drinking water. The model code directly implements a published model without change. The long term importance or significance of the findings: Provides a necessary tool to estimate free chlorine concentrations in systems using Dichlor or Trichlor as their chlorine source. Who would be interested in or could apply the results (e.g. program or regional partners, general public, local communities): Any system using Dichlor or Trichlor as their chlorine source and any regulatory body overseeing such system (e.g., drinking water utilities, researchers, regulators, regional partners).

Description:

An application has been developed to estimate the free chlorine concentration in drinking water samples when cyanuric acid is present as is the case when adding chlorine–containing chemicals commonly referred to as Dichlor (anhydrous sodium dichloroisocyanurate or sodium dichloroisocyanurate dihydrate) or Trichlor (trichloroisocyanuric acid) to drinking water systems. The provided code directly implements the published equilibrium Simple Model of Wahman and Alexander (2019) to estimate free chlorine concentrations.
