U.S. Private Domestic Wells 2020 (Well Density)

Citation:

Murray, A., A. Hall, AND F. Kremer. U.S. Private Domestic Wells 2020 (Well Density). U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

Provides an update on the national data on private domestic wells in the US using the 2020 census data. This is critical data for understanding potential impacts to this drinking water resource from contaminant sources that may impact this water supply. It also provides key data on  the population served by this resource to assess future water supply/demand.

Description:

This update will provide the most current data on private domestic well density in the US. Earlier well data was based on the 2010 census, this update will be developed using the latest 2020 census data. This data is critical to supporting the Underground Storage Tanks program given the proximity and density of underground storage tanks with respect to private domestic wells. However, this data is also key in support of RCRA and Superfund sites and FIFRA and TSCA. Lastly, this is an important resource in identifying potential impacts to this water supply from PFAS.
