Proposal for a Sustainable Communities Challenge Event
Citation:
Ingwersen, W. Proposal for a Sustainable Communities Challenge Event. ORD Executive Council Science Committee Meeting, NA, November 09, 2020.
Impact/Purpose:
To propose to the ORD Executive Council Science Committee a Federal Challenge event as part of the the RESES FY19 Community Apps with USEEIO project
Description:
The Sustainable Communities Web Challenge will expand on the US Environmentally-Extended Input-Output (USEEIO) model of goods and services and the environment, furthering tools that allow states and communities to view the positive and negative benefits of new industries and technologies in their communities. The partners recently developed reusable web interface components, the USEEIO widgets, to make integration of the model into websites easy for web developers. They also began integrating these widgets with other sources of data for mapping and describing industries in Georgia communities. Some of the input-output widgets condense information from USEEIO models into easy to understand interactive graphs, while others display tables of industries and commodities being produced in local communities of interest. An example widget can be found here, showing commodity inputs and downstream uses of a selected commodity. We’d like to host a challenge with a wider community of web developers and designers to use these widgets and build out tools to make them more useful for communities.
