Homeland Security Research Program’s (HSRP) Environmental Sampling and Analytical Methods (ESAM) Program and Associated Tools. To be Presented at Water Laboratory Alliance, Cincinnati, OH, November 17, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

A large-scale release of a chemical, radiochemical, or biological (CBR) agent can result in wide-area contamination and would require significant time and resources for recovery. Several Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Homeland Security Research Program (HSRP) decision support tools and frameworks are available to decision makers, scientists, and responders to enable more efficient and informed decision making and enhance remediation planning, coordination, and recovery efforts. The Environmental Sampling & Analytical Methods (ESAM) program provides comprehensive support for sampling and analysis conducted in response to a CBR contamination incident and is comprised of field and laboratory ready documents and web-based tools for sample collection, processing, and analysis. Under ESAM, the Selected Analytical Methods for Environmental Remediation and Recovery (SAM) document and online query tools help identify a single method for each analyte/matrix pair. HSRP also developed a series of tools to support sampling, decontamination, and waste management activities following a biological incident. This presentation will provide a concise overview of these tools and the potential application to water remediation activities.
