How My Work Evaluating New Air Quality Sensors Fits into the U.S. EPA's Research Plans

Citation:

Clements, A. How My Work Evaluating New Air Quality Sensors Fits into the U.S. EPA's Research Plans. NSF Convergence Accelerator Phase 1 Innovation Curriculum (Tracks K, L, M) - Cross-Sector Panel, Alexandria, VA, February 27, 2024.

Impact/Purpose:

The U.S. National Science Foundation awarded 16 multidisciplinary teams with funding to develop innovative technologies and solutions to address a wide range of challenges related to chemical and biological sensing. Through their Convergence Accelerator program, these teams, focused on real world chemical sensing applications (Track L), will be guided through the transition of basic research and discovery into practice.  As part of that program, NSF has organized a panel discussion to support the research teams in understanding how their research might be useful to federal agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and how they might develop research collaborations or relationships to demonstrate the usefulness of new technologies.  This presentation will introduce attendees to the U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD), our Strategic Research Action Plans (StRAPs), and our air sensor research program goals.  Lastly, a short set of tips for developing and marketing of a novel product based on that experience will be shared.

Description:

Research efforts aimed at the development of new measurement technologies capable of measuring additional or emerging pollutants of concern at lower concentrations, by smaller and more portable devices, in real-time, and at lower cost continue to be essential for meeting our current and future measurement needs.  The National Science Foundation (NSF) provides essential funding for these research efforts while shining a light on national-scale societal challenges.  Further, the NSF Convergence Accelerator program seeks to guide research teams through the transition of basic research and discovery into practice.  Recent awards were recently made to several research teams focused on real-world chemical sensing applications (Track L). NSF is organizing this panel discussion to support the research teams in understanding how their research might be useful to federal agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and how they might develop research collaborations or relationships to demonstrate the usefulness of new technologies.  This presentation will introduce attendees to the U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD), our Strategic Research Action Plans (StRAPs), and our air sensor research program goals.  Lastly, a short set of tips for developing and marketing of a novel product based on that experience will be shared.
