Development of Standard Methods Suitable for Emerging and Historical Pathogens of Concern in Raw and Treated Wastewater (APHL)

Citation:

Oshima, K. Development of Standard Methods Suitable for Emerging and Historical Pathogens of Concern in Raw and Treated Wastewater (APHL). 2023 APHL Annual Conference, Chicago (virtual), IL, October 01, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

Presentation provides a high level summary of the important parameters and decision tree for developing methods for detecting pathogens and indicators in raw and treated wastewater.  The scientific gap and need for updated methods has been further reinforced by the COVID pandemic where the need for sensitive and validated approaches for detecting and quantifying SARS-CoV-2 and other emerging pathogens came to the forefront.  The development of validatable methods for these applications will help generate data that would be applicable for national studies.  This is a new project in collaboration with the Office of Water/Office of Waste Management.

Description:

Presentation that outlines the process for developing a research plan for a BILS funded research project that is designed to develop validatable methods for detection and quanitation of emerging and historically important pathogens in raw and treated wastewater.
