Impact/Purpose:

The presentation presents the state of the science and technologies developed by the USEPA on understanding the human health risks associated with waterborne transmission of zoonotic protozoa (e.g., Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Toxoplasma gondii). Specifically, the presentation provides the audience the methods developed to detect the environmental form of T. gondii (oocysts) in our waters as well as the parasites ability to resist various chemical and ultraviolet irradiation approaches currently being used by drinking and wastewater utilities throughout the US.

Description:

The purpose of this lecture is to provide a summary of the EPA's research activities with regards to waterborne protozoa with specific emphasis on methods development to detect Cryptosporidium Giardia, and Toxoplasma gondii.
