Impact/Purpose:

Our research can help amplify the growing body of data and research that documents the multiple natural and human values supported by the beach to inform changing environmental justice and community resilience policies toward use, visitation and protection, enhancement, restoration, management and stewardship of the beach. Our research can help amplify the growing body of data and research that documents environmental justice.

Description:

Coastal access is an essential element of coastal law and planning in California, and beach visitation is a priority for local residents and visitors alike. However, many important barriers to full beach and coastal access remain, and several threats to the continued operation and use of coastal access facilities persist. While coastal access public agencies and academicexperts work hard to address these barriers to coastal access, there has historically been limited funds for social science data collection. To address this critical long-standing information need, new efforts have been initiated. We identified the availability of cell phone locational data and have been able to fund a pilot project. Collaborating the several partners, including USEPA Research staff, CSCUCI staff are now completing the successful coding of the data to GIS locations for data locational analysis and data visualization. We are currently undertaking more detailed analysis of the 50 discrete Points of Interests (access locations), integrating the spatial locational information with up-to-date demographic data.
