Impact/Purpose:
Tribes, tribal lands, and ecosystems on which Tribes depend are impacted by contaminants of emerging concern (CEC). This presentation is an opportunity to co-present with a Tribal partner on the latest efforts to by EPA and Tribes to address 6PPD-quinone. Since this CEC impact Tribes in EPA Region 9, attendees will learn about relevant efforts to address them. This session will provide updates on EPA efforts to address 6ppd-quinone. By the end of this session, attendees will: * Better understand potential Tribal issues and hazards associated with 6ppd-quinone contamination. * Know what actions EPA is taking to address 6ppd-quinone, including through collaborations.
Description:
6ppd-quinone has been identified as highly toxic to coho salmon and potentially other species. It is a breakdown product of 6ppd, an additive incorporated in rubber tires to help prevent cracking and degrading when exposed to oxygen, ozone, and temperature fluctuations. 6ppd-quinone can be present at toxic concentrations in roadway runoff and stormwater-affected creeks. This presentation, to be coupled with a introduction to the 6ppd-quinone problem from a representative of the National Tribal Toxics Council, will provide the latest summary of EPA actions to address this contaminant. The presentation will cover research, collaborative efforts, and key agency actions.
