Holder, A., S. Pender, G. Lau, M. Landis, F. Nojavan Asghari, M. Colon, AND G. Hagler. Particulate Matter Research Study in the Guayama and Salinas area of Puerto Rico: Research Project Updates for August, 2023. IN: US EPA, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, 1-2, (2023).

Impact/Purpose:

This is a monthly technical newsletter developed by the research team conducting a particulate matter (PM) field study in a community in Puerto Rico concerned about exposure to dust transported from a nearby coal-fired power plant. The newsletter supports Region 2's communication with stakeholders, including with community members interested in learning about the ongoing progress and preliminary data for the research study. After clearance by ORD, the Region plans to develop a Spanish translation version to support community member communications. This project is a special Region 2 - ORD collaborative effort tied to the EPA Administrators Journey to Justice.

Description:

This is a second monthly technical newsletter intended for public communications about an ongoing field study to measure particulate matter in a community with concerns about source emissions exposure in Puerto Rico, a non-RAP project being implemented through a CEMM and Region 2 collaboration. The intention of the newsletter is to communicate about field study updates and to be transparent about ongoing data collection through showing preliminary data figures. To provide general context to the data, daily averages for PM2.5 and PM10 are binned into Air Quality Index categories. The figures and supporting text are caveated as showing preliminary data.
