Citation:

Clements, A. Monitoring Using Air Sensors: Project Planning Steps with a Focus on Quality Assurance and Data Sharing. Dallas Air Sensor Summit, Dallas, TX, September 08, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

In September 2023, the City of Dallas Office of Environmental Quality and Sustainability will host the Dallas Air Sensor Summit.  The Summit will bring together 60+ representatives from 28 different organizations conducting air monitoring projects operating in or around the Dallas area.  Those attending the meeting will work to build relationships and discuss ways to increase data quality, data sharing, and cooperation.  This presentation will introduce attendees to the Enhanced Air Sensor Guidebook and the project planning wheel thoroughly described in Chapter 3, describe QA steps that are recommended for all air sensor project, note some considerations for specific sensors and/or pollutants, and review some recommendations to support enhanced coordination and reuse of data between the various projects.

Description:

A variety of organizations have interest in collecting additional, hyper-local air quality data.  Many projects propose the use of air sensor technologies because they are often more affordable, can be deployed with little infrastructure, and allow communities to be involved in the data collection process.  However, air sensors still have several limitations and uncertainties that must be considered when deciding if they can produce the data quality needed to answer the research question being posed.  Further, robust quality assurance (QA) can help ensure that the data quality is properly characterized and documented.  Robust QA, in turn, can increase the usefulness of the data beyond the initial project scope including when data from multiple projects is combined to better understand air quality with a region or metro area.  This presentation, given at the Dallas Air Sensor Summit, will introduce attendees to the Enhanced Air Sensor Guidebook and the project planning wheel thoroughly described in Chapter 3, describe QA steps that are recommended for all air sensor project, note some considerations for specific sensors and/or pollutants, and review some recommendations to support enhanced coordination and reuse of data between the many projects happening in the Dallas area.
