National Beach Water Quality Survey Project Description

Citation:

Merrill, N. AND K. Mulvaney. National Beach Water Quality Survey Project Description. EPA survey planning, Narragansett, RI, September 25, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

This is a project description for a survey to measure the benefits of beach water quality in urban areas.

Description:

We will develop and implement focus groups and a general and repeatable survey instrument for coastal recreation, including for use in urban waters and highly polluted waters. Potential sampling areas include urban swimming beaches included in the BEACH Act sampling for bacteria and recreational areas within the marine/estuarine designated Urban Waters locations. This study will provide large-scale information on the demand for resources affected by water quality improvements in the value-relevant dimensions; for instance, regional or state-level visitor-sheds, willingness to pay estimates, and demand/effort functions for coastal waters. This work is to support the proposed collaboration with EPA’s recreational bathing beach and human health water quality criteria research.
