Buck, K., M. Bennett, Z. Black, J. Bousquin, C. Van Der Wiele, D. Parker, AND R. Polinsky. Climate Change and Mitigation Banks: What’s your management strategy? Florida Association of Mitigation Bankers (FAMB) 2023 Mitigation Banking Workshop, Jacksonville, FL, September 07 - 08, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation will be delivered at the Annual Florida Association of Mitigation Bankers meeting in Jacksonville, FL on September 8th, 2023. A summary of research progress will be provided along with examples of potential impacts to mitigation banks along the Gulf coast of Florida. Future impacts will also be discussed as they relate to management activities, with attention to a needed balance between current and future needs.

Description:

Sea level rise, coastal development pressures, and increasing exposures to natural hazards have exacerbated the vulnerability of coastal communities. Wetland mitigation banks serve to offset losses of aquatic resources from development, however, there is potential for these sites to provide community resilience. This innovative research will investigate current wetland mitigation bank characteristics, their proximity to urbanizing areas, the threats to communities and mitigation banks from sea level rise, and the potential resiliency benefits these banks (and new banks) may provide to neighboring communities. Results will indicate where sea level rise trends are most likely to threaten communities and mitigation banks and will serve to inform decision-making. Outcomes will be presented as analyses of ecological impacts of climate change, opportunities for environmental justice communities to increase resiliency, and recommendations for mitigation bank site selection, restoration, and management.
