Citation:

Hagler, G. Wildfire smoke response: Emerging research, strategies, and tools. NEHA Annual Conference, New Orleans, LA, July 31 - August 03, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation is part of an EPA panel session at the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) annual meeting focusing on the intersection between public health and climate change. This talk provides a broad overview of recent and current ORD research related to wildfire smoke response. Research projects highlighted in this talk include ASPIRE, WSMART, Wildland Fire Sensors Challenge, sensor data inclusion in the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, Smoke Sense, and recent WUI emissions research.

Description:

This presentation provides a broad overview about ORD's recent research that is relevant to wildfire smoke response, serving as part of an EPA panel session at the National Environmental Health Association annual conference. The presentation covers research studying effective ways to improve air quality during smoke events (ASPIRE project), use of emerging technologies to reduce observational data gaps and support forecasting (sensor data inclusion in AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, WSMART, Wildland Fire Sensors Challenge), Smoke Sense, and discusses emerging areas of research (Wildland-Urban Interface - WUI fires).
